Jeff won three Pulitzer Prizes but always said he was more proud of the two Ruebens, which are bestowed by his fellow cartoonist. Jeff's prodigious talent as an artist, cartoonist, sailor and collaborator have graced this uncommon island for the ten years that he and his wife Susie have lived here winters. "He brought amusement and irony to millions - and in the process helped us all get a lighter look at being human." Said one of his enthusiasts.

Genius, like Jeff's lay in his ability to perceive life as on an IMAX screen. He was consummately observant, unlike most journalists who come to the situation with their stories already written looking for a few good quotes. As a journalist, he was fair, intelligent, damned good at everything, and self-effacing at it as well. Jeff's premature departure is an incomprehensible loss that will be felt by the millions who avidly followed his nonideological political perceptions. His "Shoe" devotees, his devoted art collectors, his Dave Barry collaborations retinue, colleagues, fellow sailors and most of all those of us who had the great honor to call him family and friend will remember his life with great admiration.

Jeff brought us a world of humor for so many remarkable years! A memorial service for Jeff will be held this winter in Key West. The Jeff MacNelly Scholarship Fund has been established for high school students in the Florida Keys where he so generously gave of his time to children.
