J ulieta’s Way Fun
Cuban Artist Julieta Del Carmen Leon Martinez specializes in engraving little slices of droll hilarity. Her work is a collection of child-like, striking moods.
From "What Happiness!" to a "Friend with a Guilty Smile". Her work is uplifting and colorful fired by a wicked sense of humor from an experienced hand. She looks at the world with awe and sees as little ones do, spanking new and unsullied.
Lemon yellow jostles with deep cadmium on fuchsia, mauves and lilacs tangle with orange. The work is brimming with small scale, swirling color, fresh and unmodulated. They are celebrations of life.
Julieta lives near Havana in a 150sq. ft. apartment across the street from the beach with her seven year old son. Her apartment is petite and full of life. It doesn’t feel crammed, rather cozy like an old wooden yacht.
Recently she e-mailed saying the power and water had come on after Hurricane Charley had passed close by. Imagine three weeks, by our standards (Georges was 13 days) and no water. Her spirits were high and she was back in her studio, her son had returned to school.
