Karen Sheridan
Ms. Sheridan received a BFA from the prestigious Boston Museum
School, renown as one of the top 10 fine arts school in the U.S.
She is highly influenced by expressionism, conceptualism and the
German expressionist. Her focus is on large format conte mporary
work of the sea and houses, primarily of Key West. Landscape of
Florida influenced color in her work. A great experience during the
three and ˝ years she has spent on the island. Proficiency in
draftsmanship and back and forth, loose tight descriptions of the
subject is what she is aiming for. “It’s just about color and form.”
She relates.
Ms. Sheridan was born in Warren, RI and began seriously working at
her art at the age of 14. She learned drawing, and painting at
school, where they taught watercolors, in the typical Irish Catholic
school manner. The school also taught that she should be a mother
not an artist.
An art career is difficult, especially for women. Intuitively, she
always knew that she had to master painting and didn’t want to worry
about making a living as a fine artist within the structure of the
competitive art system. She wanted to be confident as a painter for
herself, first. Working as at odd jobs, painting murals in bars and
restaurants and doing visual backdrops, and window displays for
department stores in Boston, supported her early career. The
department stores and small boutiques started her off in with
figurative work.
Karen has been showing in Key West for four years. This is her first
year at the Gallery on Greene. Director Nance Frank, “Karen Sheridan
is the real thing. She has a style and palette of her own and knows
how to draw people into th e quiet all important corners of Key West
life.
