Fabelo
Cuba's Charismatic Sacred Cow
The Gallery on Greene announces first auction
valued artist to be shown in Key West.
In Cuba where visual artists and baseball players
are equally revered, Roberto Fabelo stands alone
among living stars. His accomplishments are like
a steel ship moored in a hurricane harbor in
history, over 500 shows in 20 countries.
(Guáimaro, 1950) Roberto Fabelo studied painting
first at the Escuela Nacional de Arte and later at
the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. Fabelo's
most recent works in drawing, watercolor, oil, and
installation pieces comment on the human
condition, incorporating distorted human and
animal figures into portraits and fantastic
scenery. He employs elements of Expressionism
and Surrealism in his work, while at the same
time grounding the images in an almost
academic and historical setting in order to
question the division between fantasy and reality
with a magical touch. His works are likened to
voracious, insatiable mysterious, and
unforgettable guests at an unending celebration.
Besides painting, Fabelo teaches art in Cuba and
has also worked as an illustrator for novels by the
Columbian author, Gabriel García Márquez. His
work has been shown in more than forty personal
exhibitions and over 500 group exhibitions
worldwide, including; Switzerland, Japan, US,
Mexico Venezuela, Colombia, Panama
Argentina, Chile Brazil Costa Rica, Ecuador,

Fame is a cloak seldom worn with grace. But in Fabelos case, this most critically accomplished artist of classical line of pen,
brush, or instrument is a direct reflection of the genuine character of his work….. Stunning! Community efforts, caring, sharing
mentor to other artists, continually working to make Cuba a richer environment for children and artists.
His wife Suyu, their family and home reflect it all; native orchids, fruit, seashells on walls, in tables and the garden are the
continual theme of nature that surrounds the family. Their love of this tropical venue, the sea, peace and tranquility abounds in
their space in Miramar (see-the-sea). His works have graced the covers of over 30 works of literature, numerous magazine
covers, CDs, and videos.
